Tanner J. Varrelman, PhD is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Boston Children’s Hospital Computational Epidemiology Lab. Tanner’s current research focuses on the use of digital data streams to drive public health insights. Tanner has developed global syndromic surveillance signals leveraging the Global University of Maryland COVID-19 Trends and Impact Survey. He is developing UMD-CTIS measures to support the COVID-19 response in Thailand, and in other regions throughout the world.
Tanner received his PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from the University of Idaho. He developed mathematical models to study the control of infectious disease within wildlife reservoirs, and he launched a comprehensive publicly available Lassa virus database.
